Hon. Henry H. Stephens Passes To Great Beyond

The passing of Hon. Henry H. Stephens at his home in Big Hickory district at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, March 28th, removes one of Hall county's best-known and most highly esteemed citizens.  He was taken suddenly ill and died in a few moments after being stricken.  He had been in town Saturday morning in his accustomed health, and the news of his death created much surprise and sorrow among his hundreds of friends in Gainesville and over the county.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul church, in Lumpkin county, at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. M. Peck, Prof. Henry Warren, and Mr. Melvin Hughes.  Internment was in charge of the Masonic fraternity, of which he had been a member for fifty years.
Mr. Stephens was born February 17, 1846, and was therefore in his eightieth year.  He had spent his life in Hall county and was born and reared within a few miles of where he died.  In early life he united with the Methodist church and was a consistent member thereof until his death, his membership being in St. Paul.  He also was an Odd Fellow.
When the call of his country came in the sixties, he enlisted as a soldier in the cause of the Confederacy, though a mere boy, and gave his services to the South.
During his entire life he was deeply interested in his community and gave of himself freely and willingly to all movements that meant for the uplift of the section.  For forty-five years he served as justice of the peace of Big Hickory district, but during six years of this period, he never held court, because he succeeded in influencing his neighbors and friends to settle their differences out of court, which was typical of his life as a peacemaker, friend and counselor in this community.
In 1907-08 he served as one of Hall's representatives in the General Assembly, during which time he rendered splendid service.
For the past six years he had been a member of the board of tax assessors of the county and was diligent in the discharge of his duties.
For many years he was chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of Big Hickory district and always took an active interest in political affairs, though he rarely sought public honors for himself, and then only upon the insistence of friends.
Mr. Stephens was twice married, his first wife precedeing him to the grave many years ago.  His last wife survives him.  He was the father of eighteen children, thirteen of whom survive him: Ben H., Hubert C., Albert H., Samuel L., and Talmadge W. Stephens, all of Atlanta; Mrs. Effie Pascoe of Canton; Mrs Flora Jamison [Jameson] of Blue Ridge, Texas; Mrs. D. W. McGrary of the Fork district; hardy, Slaton, Fairy, Martha and Clara Belle Stephens, who reside at the old home-place.
A large concourse of friends and neighbors assembled at the funeral to pay a last tribute of respect to this useful citizen, whose passing has brought much sorrow throughout the community.
   Peace to his ashes!

Pneumonia Claims Robert L. Stephens

Robert L. Stephens, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert C. Stephens, died at the home of his parents near Murrayville last Wedndesday after a two-week illness from pneumonia.  The young man was thought to be improving, as the crisis was believed past.  However, a sinking spell on Wednesday resulted in his death.
   He was 18 years old.
He was a splendid type of young man, and gave promise of becoming a fine character, but death claimed him, while the bloom of youth was yet upon him.
Funeral services were held from Mt. Olive church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Henry Warren and W.R. England.
He was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist church.
Besides his parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Ethel, Deward, Carlton, Clyde, Estelie and James Edward.
Sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.
The deceased was a grandson of Hon. H. H. Stephens, who was buried at St. Paul church Sunday evening.
